The International Coach Federation (ICF) defines coaching as:

1. Setting Goals and Expectations.
The coach and the client clarify what the coaching relationship will focus on. This includes understanding the client’s goals, expectations, and the coaching agreement, which outlines roles, responsibilities, and the scope of coaching.
2. Coaching Sessions
Regular coaching sessions are held where the client and coach engage in meaningful conversations. The coach asks powerful questions, actively listens, and explores statements to support the client’s progress.
3. Action Planning
The coach and client partner to create a plan with actionable steps that will help the client achieve their goals. This plan may include timelines, strategies, and potential obstacles.
4. Accountability and Progress Tracking
The client is held accountable for taking the agreed-upon actions. Progress toward goals is regularly reviewed, and adjustments are made as needed.
